The Folly of Mini-Me

How often do you think to yourself, “If I just had another me then everything would be just all be OK.” It would be awesome, wouldn’t it? Someone else who thinks just like you, who you get along great with, shares your same humor, and knows exactly how you like things done.

But would it?

While I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that you are awesome at many, many things, I also do not doubt that you are also less-than-stellar at many, many things. And you probably procrastinate at those things that you don’t like to do (for me, it’s returning phone calls and doing my bookkeeping). And it’s possible that you might not always be right about stuff, so having a second opinion might, just might, be useful.

If you look at most of the great duos out there – Batman and Robin, Starsky and Hutch, Captain Reynolds and Zoe, Bj and the Bear – you have two very different personalities that just WORK together. You don’t need to be BFFs - you need a devastatingly effective team to get the job done.

If You…

  • Are really happy behind your computer, then you’ll likely benefit from an extrovert who can help the sales effort.
  • Hate process and are an “ideas person.” Someone has to execute those ideas – so find those people who just like to get the work done.
  • Love to jump right into a project without really thinking it through. You might want to find a good fact-finder / research type person who can help you sort out the nitty-gritty details.
  • Are super-extroverted and loves meeting people. You could probably use a right-hand man or woman who likes to be behind the scenes tending to the details.
  • Love research and refuse to start anything until you understand IT ALL. Then find someone who will help you jump-start the project so it actually gets off the ground.
  • Manage to consistently deliver but have no idea how you do. Find a process-oriented person who can help you (and your business) get organized so you can deliver more – even more consistently.
  • Love the details and minutia. You are probably the favorite of virtually every entrepreneur out there, as you are a stellar assistant that will make that entrepreneur shine.
  • Are extremely opinionated. Find a few other opinionated people who you know won’t always agree with you to make your ideas better.

Building a team is easy. Building an awesome team is hard work – but an awesome team is going to be happier, healthier, and more successful.

Who do you need to surround yourself with?
